Boost literacy & numeracy rates through handwriting!

Literacy & numeracy rates are in decline in many countries around the would. Could it be causal or correlational that these statistics seem to coincide with the decline in explicit handwriting instruction and practice to proficiency in many modern curriculums?

Research indicates that developing automated handwriting (ie. correctly forming each letter by memory without copying, tracing nor hesitation) decreases the cognitive load or ‘frees’ up the brain to more easily follow instructions and tend to letter sizing, spacing, grammar, punctuation and spelling etc whilst composing and/or editing.

How does handwriting improve reading & spelling?

Writing letters helps embed or store letter knowledge within the brain for the retrieval process required during reading and spelling, (ie. memories of the letter form,/shape, sound and name) hence it can help improve reading fluency and spelling competency.
